It’s going to take four years to clean and restore the organ at Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris after last year’s fire, officials announced – and then another six months to tune. The blaze toppled the spire and destroyed the roof, sending millions of toxic lead dust onto everything below, including the organ, which was built in 1733. Workers began taking the console apart on Monday, then the pipes will come down, with everything stored in custom containers in an underground workroom where the restoration will begin. The cleaning of the nave is now finished, with reconstruction yet to begin. Organist Johann Vexo says he will play France’s largest musical instrument on 16 April, 2024, the fifth anniversary of the fire. (Christophe Ena/AP, 2013)
