Brazil holds its presidential election tomorrow between incumbent Jair Bolsonaro, “the Trump of the Tropics,” and former President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and five minor candidates. Da Silva is leading in the polls and may be able to avoid a runoff if he obtains a majority. Bolsonaro’s Covid denialism is blamed by many for hundreds of thousands of Covid deaths by official neglect; he has also presided over the unchecked destruction of the Amazon. Some 33 million Brazilians were too poor to eat, according to a recent study by Oxfam and other nonprofits; the poor will decide the election, and they have turned against Bolsonaro, polls show.
