Jesus said to her, “Did I not tell you that if you believed, you would see the glory of God?”

People in Mississippi, North Carolina and around the Episcopal Church are mourning the Rt. Rev. Chip Marble, VIII Bishop of Mississippi and later an assistant bishop under Michael Curry in the Diocese of North Carolina. Bishop Marble is credited with reviving the vocational diaconate in Mississippi.

If I say, “Surely the darkness will cover me, and the light around me turn to night,” darkness is not dark to you, O Lord; the night is as bright as the day; darkness and light to you are both alike. Psalm 139:10-11

GENERAL CONFESSION

God of all mercy,
we confess that we have sinned against you,
opposing your will in our lives.
We have denied your goodness in each other,
in ourselves, and in the world you have created.
We repent of the evil that enslaves us,
the evil we have done,
and the evil done on our behalf.
Forgive, restore, and strengthen us
through our Savior Jesus Christ,
that we may abide in your love

John 11:28-44 (NRSV)

When Martha had said this, she went back and called her sister Mary, and told her privately, “The Teacher is here and is calling for you.” And when she heard it, she got up quickly and went to him. Now Jesus had not yet come to the village, but was still at the place where Martha had met him. The Jews who were with her in the house, consoling her, saw Mary get up quickly and go out. They followed her because they thought that she was going to the tomb to weep there. When Mary came where Jesus was and saw him, she knelt at his feet and said to him, “Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.” When Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who came with her also weeping, he was greatly disturbed in spirit and deeply moved. He said, “Where have you laid him?” They said to him, “Lord, come and see.” Jesus began to weep. So the Jews said, “See how he loved him!” But some of them said, “Could not he who opened the eyes of the blind man have kept this man from dying?”

Then Jesus, again greatly disturbed, came to the tomb. It was a cave, and a stone was lying against it. Jesus said, “Take away the stone.” Martha, the sister of the dead man, said to him, “Lord, already there is a stench because he has been dead four days.” Jesus said to her, “Did I not tell you that if you believed, you would see the glory of God?” So they took away the stone. And Jesus looked upward and said, “Father, I thank you for having heard me. I knew that you always hear me, but I have said this for the sake of the crowd standing here, so that they may believe that you sent me.” When he had said this, he cried with a loud voice, “Lazarus, come out!” The dead man came out, his hands and feet bound with strips of cloth, and his face wrapped in a cloth. Richard Upjohn designed the Church of the Holy Communion in New York City with and for William A. Muhlenberg, as well as a Sisters’ House next door for Anne Ayres, CHC. The parish thrived for a century or more, but by 1975 the neighborhood was no longer residential and the church merged with two others nearby. It subsequently became a cultural center, a drug rehab facility, a notorious nightclub, and most recently the home of upscale shops. (Wikipedia)

God of justice and truth, do not let your Church close its eyes to the plight of the poor and neglected, the homeless and destitute, the old and the sick, the lonely and those who have none to care for them. Give us that vision and compassion with which you so richly endowed William Augustus Muhlenberg and Anne Ayers, that we may labor tirelessly to heal those who are broken in body or spirit, and to turn their sorrow into joy; through Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

My point is this: heirs, as long as they are minors, are no better than slaves, though they are the owners of all the property; but they remain under guardians and trustees until the date set by the father. So with us; while we were minors, we were enslaved to the elemental spirits of the world. But when the fullness of time had come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under the law, in order to redeem those who were under the law, so that we might receive adoption as children. And because you are children, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, crying, “Abba! Father!” So you are no longer a slave but a child, and if a child then also an heir, through God.

Formerly, when you did not know God, you were enslaved to beings that by nature are not gods. St. Phoebe was a beloved associate of Paul’s, mentioned in Romans 16 as a “sister,” “deacon” and “patroness or helper” of the Church in Cenchreae, near Corinth, though the Order of Deacons hadn’t really developed yet. She likely provided housing and protection for believers there. (source unknown)

Galatians 3:15-22 (NRSV)

Brothers and sisters, I give an example from daily life: once a person’s will has been ratified, no one adds to it or annuls it. Now the promises were made to Abraham and to his offspring; it does not say, “And to offsprings,” as of many; but it says, “And to your offspring,” that is, to one person, who is Christ. Why then the law? It was added because of transgressions, until the offspring would come to whom the promise had been made; and it was ordained through angels by a mediator. Now a mediator involves more than one party; but God is one. Is the law then opposed to the promises of God? Certainly not! For if a law had been given that could make alive, then righteousness would indeed come through the law. But the scripture has imprisoned all things under the power of sin, so that what was promised through faith in Jesus Christ might be given to those who believe.

Mark 6:47-56 (NRSV)

When evening came, the boat was out on the sea, and Jesus was alone on the land. When he saw that they were straining at the oars against an adverse wind, he came towards them early in the morning, walking on the sea. He intended to pass them by. But when they saw him walking on the sea, they thought it was a ghost and cried out; for they all saw him and were terrified. But immediately he spoke to them and said, “Take heart, it is I; do not be afraid.” Then he got into the boat with them and the wind ceased. And they were utterly astounded, for they did not understand about the loaves, but their hearts were hardened.

When they had crossed over, they came to land at Gennesaret and moored the boat. When they got out of the boat, people at once recognized him, and rushed about that whole region and began to bring the sick on mats to wherever they heard he was. And wherever he went, into villages or cities or farms, they laid the sick in the marketplaces, and begged him that they might touch even the fringe of his cloak; and all who touched it were healed.

He gives power to the faint, and strengthens the powerless. Even youths will faint and be weary, and the young will fall exhausted; but those who wait for the LORD shall renew their strength.

Willie Evans has died, a star in American football for the University of Buffalo, New York. In 1958 his team earned a trip to the post-season Tangerine Bowl in Orlando, Florida, which refused to let him and another black teammate take the field. Their coach let the team decide what to do; in 30 seconds they turned down the invitation. It took more than 50 years for the small school, now SUNY-Buffalo, to earn another bowl bid, but when they did in 2009 in the International Bowl in Toronto, the current team invited Evans and his teammates to take the field. As an adult he worked in insurance, became a coach and school administrator, then became the city’s director of physical education. He harbored no bitterness, and instead praised his white teammates for refusing to bow to Orlando’s racist demands. (university photo)

An early shot of the Montgomery, Alabama bus boycott in 1955, the same period when Willie Evans was playing ball at the University of Buffalo. Rosa Parks and the women of Montgomery’s black community kicked off the boycott by refusing to sit in the back of city buses – which meant everyone had to walk or catch a ride. HETHERINGTON, Scott, 22, LCPL, British Army, Middleton, Greater Manchester, 2nd Battalion, The Duke of Lancaster’s Regiment

L/Cpl Scott Hetherington, 22, died at Camp Taji, north of Baghdad, on 2 January. He served as a vehicle commander with the 2nd Battalion, Duke of Lancaster’s Regiment. Friends hailed him as a “true hero” and a “brave lion” on Facebook. His commanding officer, Lt Col Rob Singleton, said, “L/Cpl Scott Hetherington was a superb soldier and a first-class leader.” He was nicknamed “Snowball” and had only been in Iraq for a month when he died. He recently became a father to a little girl.

Almighty God, we commend to your gracious care and keeping all the men and women of our armed forces at home and abroad. Huston Smith has died, one of the world’s leading experts and authors in comparing the world’s religions. He made it his business to experience them all, from Tibetan monks to Hindu yogis and Sufi dervishes; he famously dropped acid with Timothy Leary in 1962. He loved the ecstatic experiences he had with hallucinogens, but having tried them once or twice he never wanted to go back. So he kept on looking for all the ways people reach for the Divine, and considered himself a worshiper though he did not wholly identify with any religion. The son of Methodist missionaries in Suzhou, China, he was ordained a minister as well, and once was president of a Hindu philosophical society in St. Louis while pastoring a church there. They confessed that they were strangers and foreigners on the earth, for people who speak in this way make it clear that they are seeking a homeland.

We have waited weeks through the holy seasons of Advent and Christmas to publish this man’s photograph, and if you’re Australian chances are you know who he is: the incumbent Anglican Archbishop of Perth, who ignored a priest’s (Graeme Lawrence) sexual abuse of children, covered it up, lied about it, got in trouble, made excuses, told a Royal Commission he didn’t remember, stepped aside temporarily and now is gifting himself with early retirement. This church politician is lucky ordinary people are not St. Peter at the gate – but he’d better watch out for Peter himself, because nothing destroys the Church faster than a criminal priest. If they had been thinking of the land that they had left behind, they would have had opportunity to return. But as it is, they desire a better country, that is, a heavenly one. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God; indeed, he has prepared a city for them.

By faith Abraham, when put to the test, offered up Isaac. He who had received the promises was ready to offer up his only son, of whom he had been told, “It is through Isaac that descendants shall be named for you.” He considered the fact that God is able even to raise someone from the dead—and figuratively speaking, he did receive him back. By faith Isaac invoked blessings for the future on Jacob and Esau. By faith Jacob, when dying, blessed each of the sons of Joseph, “bowing in worship over the top of his staff.” By faith Joseph, at the end of his life, made mention of the exodus of the Israelites and gave instructions about his burial.

William Passavant, a U.S. Lutheran pastor, founded numerous hospitals, schools and orphanages in his spare time, but needed helpers; then on a trip to Germany he found his answer: deaconesses. He introduced them in 1849 and set apart the first American sisters a year later. The movement spread from there to other churches, and helped contribute to the ordination of women priests in The Episcopal Church beginning in 1974. Both were assigned to the 1-149th Attack Helicopter Battalion based at Ellington Field. A witness on the ground said the helicopter appeared to come apart in mid-air before crashing. Warrant Officer Mortenson had a reputation as one of the best aviation maintenance test pilots in the Guard. Purely speculative, but they were likely on a post-maintenance test flight.”

That day a severe persecution began against the church in Jerusalem, and all except the apostles were scattered throughout the countryside of Judea and Samaria. Devout men buried Stephen and made loud lamentation over him. But Saul was ravaging the church by entering house after house; dragging off both men and women, he committed them to prison.

Now those who were scattered went from place to place, proclaiming the word. Philip went down to the city of Samaria and proclaimed the Messiah to them. The crowds with one accord listened eagerly to what was said by Philip, hearing and seeing the signs that he did, for unclean spirits, crying with loud shrieks, came out of many who were possessed; and many others who were paralyzed or lame were cured. I believe in God, the Father almighty,
creator of heaven and earth.

We give you thanks, O Lord of glory, for the example of the first martyr Stephen, who looked up to heaven and prayed for his persecutors to your Son Jesus Christ, who stands at your right hand; where he lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, in glory everlasting. Amen.

A Collect for Peace

Most holy God, the source of all good desires, all right judgments, and all just works: Give to us, your servants, that peace which the world cannot give, so that our minds may be fixed on the doing of your will, and that we, being delivered from the fear of all enemies, may live in peace and quietness; through the mercies of Christ Jesus our Savior. Morning Prayer 26.12.16, St. Stephen, Deacon & First Martyr

They had these men stand before the apostles, who prayed and laid their hands on them.

Our own Maria L. Evans, ordained deacon last week. Everyone who wears the collar becomes very visible to the public, and therefore vulnerable. Let us pray for the safety of our clergy all through the year, but especially now, in war zones and city streets.

Behold, the dwelling of God is with humankind. He will dwell with them, and they shall be his people, and God himself will be with them, and be their God. Revelation 21:3

INVITATORY AND PSALTER

Lord, open our lips.
And our mouth shall proclaim your praise.

THE LESSONS
2 Chronicles 24:17-22 (NRSV)

Now after the death of Jehoiada the officials of Judah came and did obeisance to the king; then the king listened to them. They abandoned the house of the LORD, the God of their ancestors, and served the sacred poles and the idols. And wrath came upon Judah and Jerusalem for this guilt of theirs. Yet he sent prophets among them to bring them back to the LORD; they testified against them, but they would not listen.

Then the spirit of God took possession of Zechariah son of the priest Jehoiada; he stood above the people and said to them, “Thus says God: Why do you transgress the commandments of the LORD, so that you cannot prosper? Because you have forsaken the LORD, he has also forsaken you.” But they conspired against him, and by command of the king they stoned him to death in the court of the house of the LORD. King Joash did not remember the kindness that Jehoiada, Zechariah’s father, had shown him, but killed his son. As he was dying, he said, “May the LORD see and avenge!”

Giacomo Cavedone: St. Stephen. Paul approved of his being stoned to death, but Stephen’s witness and murder spurred Paul’s conversion, complete repentance and lifelong missionary work.

Acts 6:1-7 (NRSV)

Now during those days, when the disciples were increasing in number, the Hellenists complained against the Hebrews because their widows were being neglected in the daily distribution of food. And the twelve called together the whole community of the disciples and said, “It is not right that we should neglect the word of God in order to wait on tables. Therefore, friends, select from among yourselves seven men of good standing, full of the Spirit and of wisdom, whom we may appoint to this task, while we, for our part, will devote ourselves to prayer and to serving the word.” What they said pleased the whole community, and they chose Stephen, a man full of faith and the Holy Spirit, together with Philip, Prochorus, Nicanor, Timon, Parmenas, and Nicolaus, a proselyte of Antioch. They had these men stand before the apostles, who prayed and laid their hands on them.

The word of God continued to spread; the number of the disciples increased greatly in Jerusalem, and a great many of the priests became obedient to the faith.

The stoning of St. Stephen is a shocking thing, but well worth attending to closely, that the day after the joy of Christmas we are confronted with the horror of seeing someone murdered for Christ. But this reality is contained within the Christ Mass itself; the Sacrament begins “On the night he was handed over to suffering and death.” Stephen was the first martyr for Christ, a joyful deacon and powerful preacher so near to the heart and mind of Jesus that he had to be killed too. It was the ultimate honour, which is why the Church calls this a major feast day. (iconographer unknown)
